There’s really no such thing as a “typical workday” - every day brings new tasks and new challenges. Typical activities, however, include discussions and coordination with clients in a project context, a lot of programming, of course, but also research, mathematical and analytical work, and project management.

Very straightforward communication, extremely flat hierarchies, a broad range of expertise - and sometimes even time to chat for a few minutes about “everything under the sun.”

The wide range of topics. From the ethics of clean code to the latest research on machine learning methods, it covers it all.

You need to be well-organized and able to switch back and forth quickly between a wide variety of topics.

My projects mostly involve the operationalization of machine learning algorithms - that is, making the results of such algorithms available to users while ensuring stability, security, and performance.

As part of a project, our team had the opportunity to build a complete cloud architecture from the ground up that integrates data flows, data transformations, and data analysis - a major challenge, not least because of the large number of requirements that had to be met simultaneously.

I am married and have been blessed with four children.

At the top of the list are flexible work hours and a general understanding that, with children, things don’t always go as originally planned - whether it’s because one of them is sick or simply because their shoelaces won’t cooperate…

Yes, definitely - the working hours are largely flexible (aside from a relatively short core work period), and HMS offers a lot of support for parents: sick days for children, parent cafés, assistance with daycare costs, …

The flexible work hours make it easy to fit in personal commitments. It’s also important that HMS has made it clear that vacation time generally takes priority over project work, so you have a lot of freedom to plan according to your personal preferences. Even last-minute vacations have never been a problem. There are regularly interesting acitivites with coworkers organized (indoor soccer, board game nights, Japanese lessons, …).

Currently nothing.

Many of my colleagues have a similar educational background to mine, which often makes communication easier. Short lines of communication and the dynamic project environment also play a role.

An open corporate culture, flat hierarchies, and someone who’s always willing to listen - so that any problem can be solved quickly and easily. Plus, a high degree of flexibility to help balance work and personal life. And: fruit and coffee.
